Man I hate virtualmachines but Paul, there you have it. I would definitely go
the Linuxmint way Peter suggests.
there is another Linux flavour that takes you OUT of windows and FULLY into
Linux but I can’t remember it off head.
No, it is not an OS it is an Ubuntu app that helps you install Linux from
within Windows. If you want the fun Peter is
having, I STRONGLY recommend codeweavers. And yes $60 is trivial for the
ability to play windows games (ONLY THING
to miss in Linux REALLY).

Peter, Farcry? Max Payne? Grandmaster Chess?

Crossover is much much better. Runs MS Office flawlessly. I've even got 3D
games (e.g. FIFA 10) running using the native hardware rendering.

It's CodeWeavers CrossOver Office Pro.

I used it back then and it was really buggy.

Paul could start off using Linux in windows. I recommend Linuxmint. (I
think others have in the past too). It even has a windoze installer that
pulls Virtualbox for you, installs it + linuxmint and you are ready to go.
