I started taking precautions from the minute whispers about it surfaced on Twitter. And I don't think it is under control; the actions of the government suggest quite the opposite, actually.
Ebola transmits through body fluids. It is not naturally airborne, although it can theoretically be aerosolised artificially. Basically, Ebola can be spread only in three ways: Human malevolence, in which someone deliberately infects someone; human ignorance, in which Ebola is spread because people fail to take basic hygienic precautions; and accidents, in which proper measures have been taken but something unexpected happens, such as a dropped vial or an outside force (explosion, earthquake) breaches a barrier. I don't think anyone with access to weaponised Ebola wants to spread it here, and Uganda's not at war or tectonically active, so the only feasible way to spread this disease is by ignorance. So: Don't be ignorant. Wash your hands, frequently, especially before and after meals. If you have made it a habit to pick your nose or rub your eyes, stop it at once. Avoid eating with your hands if you can avoid it, and use properly cleaned utensils. See that your food is thoroughly cooked, and in sanitary conditions. The side of the street does not count as sanitary conditions. If you absolutely have to eat with your hands for whatever reason, make a habit of always keeping a bottle of alcoholic hand sanitizer or alcoholic wet wipes on your person. Actually, that may not be a bad idea to do even if you do eat with cutlery. If you shake hands, wash your hands at your earliest convenience afterwards, or do that funny wrist-to-wrist not-quite-handshake you Ugandans do sometimes. Oh, and most important of all: Assume that everyone around you is ignorant, and potentially infected, and take caution accordingly.
