I couldn't agree more. In a competitive market, actual experience is hard to come by, and there is no shame in having none.
It might also be worth mentioning that people have different methods of learning. Some people need explicit instruction, other people learn the best by trial and error... It doesn't matter which type one is, as long as you find which type you are and adjust your education accordingly. And start now. Also, if you ask twelve different programmers with which programming language to start out, you'll probably get twelve different answers, all of them more or less correct or at least of merit. Many programmers, both professional and academical, posit that starting out with PHP and Java will lead to confusion further down the road since both languages will teach you things which in most other languages are considered bad habits. This is true; however, it is also true that learning PHP and Java is a relatively fast and sure road to making money from programming.
