You name the problem - I will never understand how clever marketing made "artists" out of craftsmen like Warhol or Cage (I'm not sure if craftsman isn't a compliment). They earn(ed) a large amount of money with crap better suitably for a TV-spot or a comedy show. But maybe that's the new paradigma of art.
I'll never understand how advertising could be regarded as art, as clever as it may be made. I've leaned (in all briefness) there would two items defining art: form and content.
