Dear Stephan,

it's good practice to tune by ear. But there are occassion when I
personally feel it would be more secure to use a tuning machine. For
example when playing in an ensemble (the other members of the group
often complained there would be some hovering. That's a result when
trying to tune good thirds), in the lute duo and occassionally when I
have a flu or such. Anyhow it is necessary in my opinion to check the
tuning of the machine. Just as an example I usually move my first fret
(on the baroque lute) a bit when playing in d-major to get a "better" f
sharp.

I'm using a Korg CA-30 by the way.
