Hi Vance

I can only tell the way I have taken over from the guitar when I cannot
have my Korg: always tune fourths, but don't trust your ears with minor
thirds.

So, in order to get my A-d-f-a-d'-f' lute tuned right, I start from A
(3rd course, together with octave, then fundamental, of 6th course) with
a fork, then go in fourths: D (2nd course, then 5th course) - G (first
octave, then fundamental) - C (again, first octave, then fundamental) -
F. Only then, I finally tune the E course from A.

With a renaissance lute, things are a little more difficult, when
playing in meantone. I usually tune the major third f - a first, then
try to tune fourths _too_ big enough so as to result in a true octave G
- g'. Most times I have to readjust a couple of times. A matter of
exercise, it seems.
