Seems to me that this would be of interest to the general music community, not just to our lute-specific group. Maybe it would help in training people who can't recognize intervals.

In learning to program MS Windows applications (using the Win32 API, aka Windows User Interface), my first project has been a lute interval-naming game. The game presents a series of (randomly generated) harmonic intervals in lute tablature, and asks the player to name each one (unison, minor second, major second, ..., major seventh, octave, ...). Game duration is five minutes. Time-remaining and a running score are kept on the screen. It is working now, as far as I can tell. I've played the game only 10 minutes with noticeable improvement in my interval recognition, which is, of course, a fundamental component of music analysis. For added musicality, one could play the intervals while naming them to the computer. In the next week, I'll try to post it on the Web, attach it to a list posting, or otherwise distribute it to readers of this list. To get on or off this list see list information at http://www.cs.dartmouth.edu/~wbc/lute-admin/index.html
