Dear Daniel & all, We have the same problem with the Lute Society microfilm collection. We discussed the idea of scanning them into a digital format, but it's a formidable task, and as you say, the libraries that are hot on preserving their copyrights would not be at all pleased if multiple copies were made. If only all libraries were as enlightened as those who make their digital collections freely available it would make sense to digitise all the material we have. But we often rely on libraries good will to enable the publication of facsimilies, so it's not at all a good idea to alienate them by making what they would view as pirate copies. The model established by the CD Rom of the vihuela prints is a very good one - it would be nice to see more early sources made available in that way.

Should the LSA digitize all the films in the Library? Nice idea. Requires quite a bit of (volunteer?) time by someone. Then what? Sell them on CD or by file download? May run into objections from the libraries that own the original publications and could be damaging to publishing houses like Minkoff that sell facsimiles. Other suggestions?
