Probably the usual continuo Gallichon ie the large (usually single strung)
instrument in A (tuned C D G c e a) with a string length c.95cm (the
Edlinger in Prague is a good example).

Thanks. Sounds like a useful continuo instrument, by the way. Is there
anything known on why these instruments were paired? (see Telemann and
perhaps BWV 198 if you'll extend the question to lute, or accept gallichon
as an option there). Not loud enough when used alone (95cm single strings,
cannot imagine that to be the case), looks fun, there's money for something
exotic and there's enough so let's get two lutes? The Fasch conerto as well
as the Trauerode don't have really independant parts, so much doubling. Not
much musical need for two pluckers. So, anybody with more than a wild guess?

Rather OT on the Karamazov list, but I'll give it a try anyway:
Does anybody havemore info on the Concerto in G-major for two Houtbois de
Silve, two Violas, two Chalcedons and b.c. by Johann Friedrich Fasch? I'm
to
play it (with Alfonso, hi Alfonso, fun!) next month and received the score
yesterday. The Chalcedons are mostly unisono and a lot of the time
unsinono
with the bc. There are some 'solo' passages, nothing spectacular. Anybody
has any idea what tuning, what instrument, what's most likely for Fasch,
anything? Range is D below bass cleff to e' above middle c'.
