Hundreds of Telemann cantatas have a BC for the gallichon. However Kuhnau,
JSB's predecessor. did ask for permission to obtain a pair but his request
wasn't approved - possibly the problem was not just procuring the instruments
but getting, and paying, the players.

Yes, the large gallichon is loud (more so even than a proper size theorbo of
similar string length ie in the 90s) since the string tension allows very
vigorous plucking. Kuhnau also says it is admirable for leading the bowed
basses (presumably to stop them from dragging in on entries) so volume doesn't
seem to have been the problem; more likely the reason for pairing may be a
combination of the particular effect of two (doesn't double the volume
incidentally) and, like with other instruments, to share any problems and page
turns.

Thanks. Sounds like a useful continuo instrument, by the way. Is there
anything known on why these instruments were paired? (see Telemann and
perhaps BWV 198 if you'll extend the question to lute, or accept gallichon
as an option there). Not loud enough when used alone (95cm single strings,
cannot imagine that to be the case), looks fun, there's money for something
exotic and there's enough so let's get two lutes? The Fasch conerto as well
as the Trauerode don't have really independant parts, so much doubling. Not
much musical need for two pluckers. So, anybody with more than a wild guess?
