There was also a gread deal of discussion on the list, about double  
fretting. I have been very happy with the double frets that Stephen  
Gottlieb made for me.
They can also be used instead of tastini for certain tunings, I believe.

  The lute in Holbein's "Ambassadors"
There are 8 tied frets, relatively thin, in what appears to be a  
double-fret arrangement (ie each fret passes twice around the neck)  
and no soundboard frets on what looks like a very clean belly.
