Great responses, all- a pleasure to listen to; quite elucidating to hear the same song & consort version in different performances. The more relaxed tempi that still move seem to be the best- van Ooijen's consort strikes a perfect balance; solid, secure, but definitely rocks.
We tried the song last night (the soprano with whom all is shared) and indeed it is quite performable at 140- becomes a bit of a patter song at that pace, (a possible approach)- and it actually becomes hard NOT to do the last section in one breath. But I cannot do any of the little divisions I throw in on the repeats without sounding like a chipmunk on speed. But the tempi chosen by dt and Ron & Donna are beautifully paced, and are much more moving, enjoyable performances. Anyone trying the lute solo galliard in VLL? I have just been playing around with it; 100 seems the best tempo for this intricate version (for me, anyway on short notice) without losing control or expression; at 92 it seems to drag. Opinions and examples of this would be nice to hear, also, while we are still galliarding.
