as it seems goethe did not play the lute himself but pretended it in a
poem... (which was set into music by zelter)
(Goethe is reported to have practiced cello and cembalo in his youth,
but without enthusiasm...)
Staendchen
Zu meiner Laute Liebesklang,
Horch auf, horch auf!
Toent dir, o Liebchen, mein Gesang,
Horch auf, horch auf!
Vernimm die Toene, die mit Beben
Der liebe, vollen Brust entschweben.
Horch auf, zu meiner Laute Klang
Toent, Liebchen, mein Gesang,
Horch auf, horch auf!
Schau her im falben Mondenglanz,
Schau her, schau her!
Den schattenlichten Wirbeltanz,
Schau her, schau her!
Es schwebt in seinem luft'gen Kreise
Der Hauch der Liebe sanft und leise.
Horch auf, zu meiner Laute Klang
Toent, Liebchen, mein Gesang,
Horch auf, horch auf!
Ich harre dein im Grau'n der Nacht,
Mach auf, mach auf!
Von keines Lauschers Blick bewacht;
Mach auf, mach auf!
Lass, holdes Kind, uns Herz an Herzen
Ein suesses trautes Weilchen scherzen;
Mach auf, zu meiner Laute Klang,
Toent, Liebchen, mein Gesang,
Horch auf, horch auf!
Johann Wolfgang von Goethe
Komposition:
Carl Friedrich Zelter [1758-1832]
There is a book Goethes "Lieder zur Laute" which seem to be
Transscriptions (for Wandervogel-Laute I guess):
Goethe, Lieder. Zur Laute gesetzt von Fritz Joede. Wolfenbuettel,
Zwissler 1920

Interesting, I'm sure some of the german members of the list can tell
us more. But Goethe's father was born in 1710, a little before that.
So, I was wondering, Goethe being Germany's National Culture Icon, and
all the libraries full of books written about him, every scrap of
paper connected to the man preserved, is there anything more on the
lute playing of his father: music, instrument, teacher, anecdotes?
