Hello Arto, hello list
yes, I also was in Kassel and spoke about the work of Johann Sigismund Weiss.

Frank told in his lecture on Johann Caspar Goethe, what he found regarding Goethe (father) and his lute playing. In the account book of Goethe he found many trivia that give a good sight on the fact, that he really played the lute quite extensively: He purchased lute strings and lutes, and also attended many concerts.

There also had been a poem on Johann Caspar Goethe, where his lute playing was mentioned, but unfortunately Frank wasn't able to find the complete original - it seems to have survived only in extracts.

Unfortunately I cannot give any more details, but Frank's lecture will be published (in German) in the Jahrbuch of the Deutsche Lautengesellschaft.

Best regards
Markus

A googling result:

In the 11th International Festival of the Lute, Kassel - Germany
2007, 18th to 20th of May, there seems to have been a lecture of this matter: Dr. Frank Legl (Weilheim/Germany): "Johann Caspar Goethe und die Laute".

Perhaps someone in the List was there or even knows Dr. Legl?

All the best,

Arto
