I agree with everything David says.

Just a further thought - if you attack the lute very strongly, you get a lot of noise at the beginning of the note, followed by the usual decay, like a singer spitting out consonants at the beginning of every word. If you coax the sound out of the lute (concentration on quality rather than quantity), the start of the note will be less dramatic and blend better with what remains during the decay. We need vowels as well as consonants.
