vocal coaches and choir directors demand strong consonants from their
singers, knowing that what is done well in rehearsal is too often
forgotten in the heat of performance, but by then the effect is tempered
and what was wanted.

I guess the point is to be in control, be capable and aware of what you
are achieving; both at the instrument and in the audience.  When solo the
sound of the lute itself is everything, in ensemble often only the attack
will be distinguished.
