Short of fitting a wider finger board, you could change the spacing of
the strings on the nut: each pair of strings a little closer to each
other, the course themselves a little more apart. A little more space
between the higher courses than between the lower course. But you
might run into buzzing string within the pair that forms a course, so
experiment if you can. Depending how the nut of your lute is, you can
do that yourself. Some nuts have many shallow grooves, all you have to
do is shift the strings from one groove to another. Other nuts have
deep grooves, each groove the size of the string it must guide. Here,
make a good drawing before you do anything, or take the instrument to
a maker. He might supply you with more than one nut, just held in
place by the pressure of the strings, no glue needed, so you can
experiment. It might be worth the trouble. I adjust the spacing on the
nut myself, if needed.

David - had a guitar pupil once who could play an Em chord with the
tip of one finger. No gloves, btw.
