...mmmm...maybe this is a woman-engineers thing...I'm an engineer too. And you are right about the male geek world ;-)
Laura (no moustache, no beard, just for the stats) 2009/9/10 Suzanne and Wayne <[1][email protected]> From a female list reader: > I do not ask too many questions, but certainly I do read the posts! On a variety of topics I think it is important for those who actively participate to remember the *large* fraction of people reading the list who never or rarely speak up. I imagine that of the quiet ones, a larger portion of the female list readers are quiet. I think this is partly a bias in internet usage, partly a bias in the lute world, and partly a result of the character of this list in particular. Lists *do* develop personalities. I've also been on lists that were heavily female dominated, and the personality is extra- ordinarily different. But most folks who join a list will lurk quietly for awhile, to learn the personality, etc. Once you've been lurking on this list for awhile, you learn that it has a male geek bias. Now as a female (engineer) I lived and worked in the male geek world for quite awhile, and so am not afraid of it, and know how to fit in. But not all females feel that way. Another factor is whether you feel you get something worthwhile from a list compared to the volume of posts, the tone of the list, and the list's personality. I was off the lute list for a *long* time because I didn't find that tradeoff worthwhile. I only rejoined when I had more leisure, and when I read on the lute page that a certain participant of those prior years had been permanently kicked off the list.
