Yes, I feel a certain freedom is called for in a prelude, which should
probably sound as though it is being improvised. In fact it occurred to
me that I might have played it (particularly the ending) quite
differently if it really had been a prelude *to* something, depending on
the mood of the something! It can be very effective to begin the first
note of a song on the last chord of a prelude, so that the transition is
absolutely seamless. In general, I like the idea of linking pieces (as
Pantagruel do on their CDs) rather than having short pieces separated by
silences, as you get on most lute CDs.
