Then, that was the way it was done. It seemed that, when in a group, people would play the harmonies that were then known (see Mr Duffin's excellent book for ideas). So, if you are after "solo medieval lute", then take a four-course lute (or oud, or whatever), a plectrum (or quill) and start playing the tunes.
