Thank you!!!!!!!! so much for all the info on medieval lute. Very much appreciated!

One other question: what did they use for plectrums? I seem to recall hearing somewhere that they used quills, or some kind of thin bone-material. Any recommendations?

Thanks much in advance,

If you can get hold of the UK Lute Society's 'Lute News' for April 2004 (number 69), there are a couple of articles and illustrations of medieval lute and some discussion of plectra.

You will find some discussion of this subject in the archives. A very odd idea, evidently coming from Crawford Young, is to use a quill - but the other end, not the fat bit! (Or to use a bit of lute string as a long-lasting alternative).
