why would he (or she) not rather focus on the music? Especially playing a repertoire which was primarily chamber music and not meant to have "an effect on people", ignorant ones in particular.

That's a bit harsh, isn't it Danyel? Do you really have such contempt for your audiences?

Why would you tell lies to children? Why would you confuse their budding sense of history?

You mean Matthias's talking to kids about castles and dragone etc.? Come on, man! Kids love that kind of stuff! It sparks their imaginations. Without that, they will grow up thinking history is boring. Mathias was attempting to bring the music to life. I give him a lot of credit for that.

I know that you are trying to be provocative and that you exaggerate the vulgarity of the populist approach in order to draw sour replies like mine, but I am still inclined to answer seriously. I don't see the point of moving people at all.

I do: if you move them, or impress them in some way, they will want to hear you again. If you don't, they won't.

I'd rather move the audience — towards a more profound understanding of history and music in it.

Very commendable. So would I. But I personally would not be able to do that if I held my audience in contempt. Or...if I "respected" them so much that I myself became boring and pedantic.
