Hello,

Well, I think Danzig 4022 is a really wonderful collection of early
17th c. lute music, mostly dances and arrangements of songs and some
German hymns. It is truly international in its character, with
Hungarian and Dutch dances among others, though the largest group
dances constitute of 41 Balletti Polachi. It is a perfect blend of
European lute music of that time. :)
Some pieces are easy to play, some are rather difficult.
I played all pieces on 8-course lute, though some pieces require 9- or
10-course lute. Not too many, though. From all 222 pieces written in
Danzig 4022 only 25 of them should be played on 9-course lute.
What is fascinating for me is the fact, that in this collection we have
pieces in renaissance style as well as pieces written in early baroque
style, using "style brise", like almost all pieces by Robert Ballard.
His pieces are among my favourites. :)
It is also very interesting time in the history of Gdansk, with its
cultural blend, Polish and German, and with English theatre performing
there almost every year from 1601-1619 and 1636-1655!

Some well known pieces, like Monica or Est-ce Mars are here in unique
   arrangements.

Overall - making a research (it is printed in the facsimile by Tree
Edition) and recording the CD - it was enjoyable, though sometimes
   stressful, adventure.

   Magdalena
