It took about 8 seconds to do the same on my desktop machine running Debian
Sid, i.e., I typed startx and everything was ready about 8 seconds later.

It's a lot slower on my laptop, though, which has a 5400 RPM SATA disk. The
drives on the desktop machine are 15000 RPM SAS. At some point I'll make sure
Gnome is properly functional on the laptop and time it.
