That still happens? On spinning metal that *isn't* sick?
How old are the disks, and when was the last time you ran a SMART
self-test on them?
map smartctl -t short -- /dev/sd[abc] # or long
watch map smartctl -l selftest -- /dev/sd[abc]
Note that Seagate controllers report in-progress self-tests; WDs do not
report a test until it has finished/failed/aborted.
