Thanks to Manoj, Les, Morrie and Duncan I am preparing to ditch my
failing SSD.
I have taken Morrie's advice and loaded the free trial of Turbo Print
onto my laptop, I will be taking up the purchase, now. The resulting
images are spectacular.

Canon have never been known for linux support, particularly for
any of the fancier Pixma printers. (Can't let any of their sooper
top sekret teck stuff slip onto the interwebs!)
