I share similar sentiments on this point. But I would like to share
that I had observed in either Zenwalk and Vector Linux that, inserting
a USB drive would make the drive appear on the desktop. SImilar to the
current behaviour in PCManFM, the drives will only mount when clicked.

I wonder if this behaviour will improve usability?
