There is a greeter interface [1], and two example greeters are
provided in the source code (GTK+ and WebKitGTK+).  I envision people
writing themes easily using the WebKit greeter, using the GTK+ greeter
when they want fast performance and writing new greeters when they
have special requirements (e.g. a clutter based greeter).

The idea is that it should be no harder to write a greeter than any
other desktop application.
