Ahh, that's not a crash, that's a freeze. My mother was experiencing 
those for a while, so I gave her Yakuake, wrote a little script I put at 
/usr/local/bin/reset_lxpanel, and taught her to use 
<F12>reset_lxpanel<Enter>

My solution was basically the same as Geoffrey's except that, since 
she's using Lubuntu, the command was "killall -9 lxpanel; sleep 1; 
lxpanel --profile Lubuntu"

If Yakuake is too heavy for you, you could also use the "kuake" plugin 
for urxvt. My config to enable that is at 
https://github.com/ssokolow/profile/blob/master/home/.Xresources if you 
want an example.
