I don't think this is related to lxpanel. It looks like you have a .la
file somewhere that still references libgio-2.0.la. (I can reproduce the
bug by adding the reference to /usr/lib/libcairo.la.) Can you run the
following command:

    find /usr/ -name '*.la' -exec grep libgio-2.0.la {} +

It should tell you which .la file(s) are still referencing
libgio-2.0.la. In case there are many, I am not sure which one is
important for lxpanel. I am no .la file expert, but I do tend to think
that the bug is related to .la files, and not lxpanel directly.

BTW, for debian I found this: [1]. It says that la files are indeed
posed for removal.
