When a .desktop file is in the menu, the Comment field is displayed as a tool tip upon mouse-over (great!).
When the same .desktop file is put in the Desktop directory (so that it appears on the desktop), mousing over the launcher displays the Name, redundantly, instead of displaying the Comment. Right click on any menu entry and Add to Desktop to achieve this. I'm running Lubuntu Trusty, the last LTS version, which has: lxpanel 0.6.1 I know this lxpanel is old, but I did check the change log for subsequent versions and didn't see this issue addressed. I was going to post to bugs on SF, but I saw that that bug list hasn't been touched since February...
