Your settings appear to be sane. Theme is a matter of taste. Panel
preferences of Top, Left, Margin 1, 100% wide, height 26 pixels and
iconsize 26 pixels works for me if you like a small panel. My panel is at
the top, which seems to work best with lxpanel. I also use Solid Color with
opacity.
I also have Make window managers treat panel as a dock and Reserve space
both checked.
Are your applications up-to-date? The current stable lxpanel is 0.10.1.

Panel Appearance setting was on /System Theme/, I do not know what theme
is being used.
With the Appearance setting on /Image/, using the default background.png,
the panel is also disappearing/reappearing as it did on the /Solid Color
(with opacity)/ setting, when window tabs are closed.
The Openbox theme was on Oxygen. I have changed it to Artwiz-boxed (if this
is the System Theme).
