roughly, this seems to be related to the chosen system theme,

IIRC, the 'oxygen' theme was mentioned - AFAIK, 'oxygen' is only
a QT/KDE theme, without any GTK support

also, the 'artwiz-boxed' theme is not relevant - that is an
openbox theme, affecting only window frames

i would suggest trying several other themes, to determine if the
problem is theme related - the significant theme to change is
the GTK theme (change it with lxappearance) - for example, i
would suggest trying at least a GNOME theme 'adwaita' and a MATE
theme 'blackmate'

I'm am using the Oxygen icon theme.

When I have lxappearance open, the only options I see are Widget, Color, Icon Theme, Mouse Cursor, Window Border, Font and Other. If that option is actually Widget, it was already on Adwaita. I changed it to Adwaita-Dark and it had no affect on the panel, the window bar icons are still missing. The only other theme installed is HighContrast.

One thing I don't know, is whether Mageia has compiled LXDE with GTK+2 or GTK+3, although there is a package available that installs MATE themes.

I installed several other GTK+2 themes, none of them would load in when selected in lxappearance/Customize Look and Feel. Adwaita was the default and when any of the new themes were selected, the sample graphics did not change.

I also installed two GTK+3 themes, Customize Look and Feel didn't even list those.

I have since installed Debian on another desktop and am not having this issue with lxpanel. In all likelihood, I will replace the other OS installed on that other desktop, with Debian.
