While I agree that we should keep the short, because only very
few people have problems with it, let me say that the memory 
overhead is not much worse than it is in LyX now.  The current
structure allocates quite a bit of "not needed memory" in order
to get good performance.
Also, with the new kernel, we have a potential massive saving
from the sharing of paragraph parameters, which is the main
memory eater now (IIRC.)

So, I don't think we will get into trouble with this.
