Peter submitted some very interesting remarks a few months ago. I seem
to remember that Alejandro fixed some things after this message.

For reference, I append the message sent then, but I'm sure Peter has
other ideas...

Subject: Lyx bug list

Lyx: `bugs ', `quasi-bugs' & `missing features'

VERSION: Lyx 0.12.1pre8, Aug 17 1998

In our Department, we use almost all the known equation editors,
ranging from Lyx, Scientific Word, and Mathtype to good old emacs,
vi and nedit. So, I hope the Lyx team doesn't mind that I've done
the occasional cross-comparison.

The following list summarises definite `bugs', `quasi-bugs' (Lyx
operates differently to how you'd expect it to), and, last but not
least, `missing features' of other programs, which would be
really nice to see in Lyx.

BUGS:

(1) (Already reported) Bibtex bug; bibtex requires a full path
decription, while standard latex allows a relative path. This is an
annoyance more than a serious problem, but unless you know about it,
you find that bibtex may just not work at all.

(2) (Already reported) Author bug; when you import a multi-line author
description from latex, it doesn't tex correctly within Lyx.

(3) Revtex bug; even though revtex appears as a document class, the
resulting tex file will not tex correctly. This is probably mostly due
to a conflict between revtex requiring latex2 with document styles,
and Lyx requiring latex2e, with classes.. Very confusing. Can be cured
by exporting the file, then editing the front-matter, and texing in
the usual way. If you try to change the latex class within lyx, this
can generate NEW latex problems.

QUASI-BUGS:

(1) (Already reported) Fraction bug; when you import {a \over b}, this
doesn't get converted to a latex fraction. We've had some success
fixing this with an external filter, to map {a \over b} into
frac{a}{b}. Why not include this within Relyx?

(2) (Already reported) Symbol bug; many symbols don't appear in the
screen representations for Lyx equations. For example, \hbar, \simeq,
etc.

(3) (Already reported) Text color import is not supported within
Relyx.

(4) Boldmath bug; there appears to be no way through the menu system
to make a math symbol bold, as in the use of vectors. Of course, I can
add Tex to do this. The user manual indicates a way to get bold text,
but there is no clear equivalent of the revtex bbox{}.

(4) Math cut/paste bug; I frequently can't cut and paste within
equations, since the cursor selects a block larger than I need. This
generally occurs inside bracketed expressions, but also in square
roots, and in fractions, and other expressions of this type. This
creates a problem when you decide to remove a large bracket - Lyx
won't delete the bracket without erasing its contents, but you can't
cut out the contents of the bracket either...

(5) Mouse bug; the X-windows mouse-button activated cut/paste doesn't
work inside equations. There is a certain inconsistency apparent
between cut/paste inside and outside equations. For example, outside
equations, the backspace, C-x, and delete are all equivalent. Inside
equations, they are not equivalent. In so far as I have tested, C-x
deletes and fills a paste buffer, backspace does nothing, while delete
deletes and doesn't fill the paste buffer.

(6) Math search/replace bug; search/replace doesn't work inside
equations. This is a problem when you decide you need to change all
instances of \alpha to \beta (for example). Note that this is one of
the very useful features of a conventonal Latex editor.

MISSING FEATURES:

(1) Having a fully-featured search-replace as in Nedit, would be very
nice.

(2) The usual middle mouse button, moving the cursor to the current
location of the mouse on the cursor bar, would be a useful feature in
large files. For similar reasons, a Nedit-style split-screen, or
double window is useful to navigate around in large files.

(3) Having ALL the keyboard features (like math-numbering, C-enter to
turn equations into multi-line environments, etc) on the menus, would
be very helpful - otherwise its hard to tell what features exist in
the program. This would help where there is a conflict between the
keyboard entry and the desktop manager, as in the C-tab (which
conflicts with a KDE key entry!) causing a (fixable) incompatibility
between two very useful programs .......
