While it is certainly true that the external inset is not done in the
sense of be perfect, I think it should be able to insert PNG files,
and even invoke the Gimp on them, as it is. At least, that was the state
of affairs at the FILM.
If not, this is a bug, rather than a missing feature.

When that is said, I'd wish I had the time to finish the external inset
and give it the last spit & polish. But realistically, I won't be able to
find any time for that.

Maybe I can convince Baruch to spend a little time on it after the
excellent graphics inset?
Ideally, the graphics inset and the external inset could share some
functionality: Inline previewing. In my mind, the new graphics inset and
the external insets are a perfect match to provide the perfect
"material" inset when/if joined.
