I would like to be able to customize the appearance of captions through
the layout file. I don't know if this is possible when the caption is
an inset. No tweaking through context menus, as that is not the right way.

No, but note that I was already aware of that possibility. Look at the
attachment to bug 4647 regarding contcaptions. It works perfectly in
LyX 1.4, but in 1.5, captions and contcaptions look different on screen,
and they should not.
