I agree that in the end it boils down to the fact that 2.2 shouldn't be opened
in the first place - 2.1.1 is mere consequence - and I feel sorry to be
silent at that moment ;)

Why do you care whether there is a 2-2 staging branch or not ? What does
it matter to you whether people have there fixes living on their own
machine or in this branch.
If you don't like it, don't look at, and don't use it.
