The babel documentation says (p. 8): Even the babel core defined \textlatin, but is was somewhat buggy because in some cases it messed up encodings and fonts (for example, if the main latin encoding was LY1), and therefore it has been deprecated. I do not think we should rely on this macro. JMarc
