OK, I could not see nay problem and also not after updating MikTeX.
Nevertheless, when MikTeX tries to rebuild the font cache after being updated, it gets stuck scanning c:/Windows/Fonts.
Maybe this takes a bit longer. Alternatively just run an update again. If the problem persists 1. update the FNDB of MikTeX 2. update the format files 3. update the FNDB of MikTeX 4. run again an update.
Can I remove MikTeX and install TeXLive?
Do you always give up if it doesn't work immediately. As said on my 3 PCs i don't have any problem with MiKTeX. If your problem persists it must be a problem with your MiKTeX, probably you changed there something. If you cannot fix it, uninstall MikTeX _completely_ and subsequently reinstall it. (if possible to the same folder as before to save you some reconfiguration work for LyX)
