Yes, the search/replace is poor currently. Adding incremental search
should be easy. Regular expressions are IMO doable. What we really
need is a way to search/replace fonts, special cahracters, etc. And a
way to act on math insets, for example. It does not seem to me that it
will be easy, unfortunately.
