MLA stands for 'Modern Language Association.' The association determines
general academic and research paper standards for general formatting,
note and bibliographic information requirements and entry formats, etc.
They provide a most helpful and straightforward handbook, known as, (of
all things!) the "MLA Handbook for Writers of Research Papers," which
is a literal mine of information used by Academics and others to
determine required information and formatting for the various parts and
aspects of formal research papers and presentations.

I believe I've seen LaTeX classes for this format on CTANs. One might
check there.
The handbook itself is pretty ubiquitous in university bookstores and
runs probably around $15 US or so. It's a bit more succinct than the
Chicago Manual of Style and there are slight differences in suggested
format between the two.
