There's surely a bug somewhere, but I fear we might not be able to

Tim, I am particularly interested by performance issues and might be
able to solve your problem if we were able to determine what it is really.
I have proposed several solutions for finding the culprit, but indeed
they require some work from your part. I am sorry, but this is the best
we can do.
