OK -- here is an example file.
Put the cursor at the beginning of the second chapter, press <Return>.
Then select the newline and the chapter and insert a branch. Then put
the cursor on the chapter inside the branch (which yes was unfortunately
converted to standard)
That sounds like a bug to me.
and change it back to chapter. I then get the attached .lyx file which I think
does what you want.
Just to be clear, I do this kind of thing all the time. When writing
papers, I often have material that is not to be included in the paper
itself (due to word limits), but that I want to include in the version I
post to my website, and will include if I ever publish the paper in a
collection.
One aspect of it, in this kind of case, is unintuitive: The branch
itself should be in a 'standard' paragraph (which basically means: there
is nothing special about it). The contents of the branch, however, can
have whatever layout you want.
Note that you can also use branches within paragraphs. One use: Papers
often have to be anonymized for refereeing. So I might omit a reference,
and you can use a branch to do that. Note that you can also use
'inverted' branches to include material in the 'opposite' case. So I
might have something like:
[branch=anon](REF omitted)][/branch][branch=anon inverted](Heck,
1995)[/branch]
