I just have to add my 2 cents :)
Have both books; both are good but each has a different focus. The Lamport
book focuses on core LaTeX, whereas the G, M, S, one is oriented more
toward various available packages. Neither book constitutes easy
reading, i.e., to be used mostly as a reference manual. For a quick LaTeX
reference you can go to: http://www.giss.nasa.gov/latex/ltx-2.html
Out of curiosity, if you're going to go through the trouble of learning
LaTeX, why bother using LyX? ;)
(I'm a long time LaTeX user, so I regard the level of indirection provided
by LyX as too restrictive and somewhat of a PITA; however in order for
.tex to become the company documentation standard, I have to get the
support staff to use LyX (i.e., convert them from Word) as they refuse
(fear) to learn LaTeX. Hence, I have to learn LyX to teach LyX. )

Piotr
