An excellent question! My top priority as a writer is to use an absolutely
no-brainer tool. Even with a no-brainer tool many times I forget a point I
was trying to make. If I had to switch my brain to markup, even for a second,
my writing would suffer terribly. This is one reason I switched away from the
WYSIWYG editors -- I got tired of all the fine tuning when I was supposed to
be writing.
So why do I want to learn LaTeX? So I can make my own character and paragraph
styles without asking 50 questions on the list :-). The LaTeX goes in my
layout files (or I suppose .cls files). I can pound out chapters, and then
one day LaTeXify the .layout file to get the look I want. But when I'm
pounding out content, I needn't worry about markup or anything else.
