I found the problem: book.cls does this by default, but not when the language is "french" (by the way, selecting french changes the numbering in the dvi file, but not in lyx). But the answer to my question is in the help pages of lyx, under keyword "counter". (thanky to Herbert Voss for pointing this) Thank you, Matthieu
