Not like, this is it. What can be misleading is that AFAIR
\usepackage[french]{babel}
selects french is french.sty is installed and frenchb if not.
You have to be explicit if you have both.
french originates from GUTenberg while frenchb sticks to the babel
internationalisation mechanism.
