What about shortcuts?

Greek letters (symbols):
[ALT]-m-g-a == \alpha
[ALT]-m-g-b == \beta
etc.

I'm with you on the brackets. I found the shortcut for them some weeks
ago, but now I can't remember them or where they are described, so I
rely on the math panel again.

....and you can always stick with the version of the software you like
best --- as long as you take the time to read the `release notes' before
"up"-grading.
