What about shortcuts?

Greek letters (symbols):
[ALT]-m-g-a == \alpha
[ALT]-m-g-b == \beta
etc.

I'm with you on the brackets. I found the shortcut for them some weeks
ago, but now I can't remember them or where they are described, so I
rely on the math panel again.

best --- as long as you take the time to read the `release notes' before
"up"-grading.

Better still map a special key for this.
I use the F9 key for [ALT]-m-g

so for \alpha I use F9-a
for \beta I use F9-b etc.

Easy to type. Easy to remember.

In order to set this key put the following line in your lyxrc file or a bind file.

\bind "F9" "math-greek"
